I replace mine on my '99 last year. That said, if you haven't had the chance to do so, just clamp a pair of vise-grips on one of the shafts next to the damper when you open your hood.
Also replaced my trunk lid struts too. It was pretty annoying (and dangerous) to have it fall on my arms as I was moving parcels in/out of the trunk.
