In the engineering world, what you mention with the beefier Volvo front bushing would be referred to as an uprev'd part... there should always be a part number with a revision number stamped on it (in some way, depending on the part)... so the end user (in this case the tech) can ensure that they are getting the right revision of the part - ie that meets the current revision spec. Actual OEMs should be producing to the spec so the rev should be part of that... copycat manufacturers may not have access to the spec, so their part would technically not be acceptable even if it might appear to fit...
Revision control is an important part of ISO certification...
But I have rarely noticed this on automotive parts, and certainly not from the perspective of buying parts from automotive counters or websites, where in many cases the person selling the part has very little knowledge...
Of course the way things *should* work is not always the way the world *actually* works! There is so much copycat junk in the world now, even to the extent of stamping legitimate part numbers, revisions, and manufacturer's logos on fake parts that in no way meet the spec!! So that is to say, we're very lucky to have yourself and other techs here who see more of these parts on a regular basis and can identify the issues.... so thanks!
