I think you are right to get the whole assembly. The motor is probably the dead part but other parts wear over time too that are good to have new. The level sender resistor wears out, and the wires connecting to it get old.
As suggested, get spare check valves, hose and clamps. They do get brittle, I have broken them more than once. You can cut, clamp in new short hose if that happens. Vaseline when putting them back in
The big o-ring/lock ring on the top usually comes off with gentle tapping around the outside of the ring. I bought the tool too, it is very handy.
The gas gauge can sometimes act up if the plastic surge baffles in the tank get disturbed or broken when removing the pump. You have to wiggle the pump around to get it out. You may see the baffles or pieces of it floating around in the tank, if you have them
