The screen is there because mechanics have a nasty tendency to drop a whole bunch of nuts and bolts into the engine during oil changes, so it stops them from getting into the oil pump.
I cannot in my wildest fantasy figure out what the hare brained engineer was thinking creating a screen so fine that nothing but virgin oil would pass through.
That coupled with the sloppy piston rings creating sludge and coffee grind kernels was a recipe for disaster.
But on the other end of the spectrum. The old 900 pre 94 had a screen with fairly large holes and it was cases here and there where particles would get in and jam the oil pressure reducing valve making the engine loose oil pressure.
The cure for that was to either remove the cap and valve (difficult on the 16V engine) and clean out or remove the oil pump (less difficult) to free up the valve that way.
The V6 engine does not have a sludge problem and larger screen mesh.
