I used 1/4"ID just because it was a tight fit and I knew it wouldn't leak, but it's a bitch to fit because the hose has to expand so much. The outer diameter of the fuel pipe is 8mm/5/16" I believe, so to get it on, I had to lube the hose and literally screw it on until enough covered the pipe to clamp it, which is probably unnecessary with 1/4". The 5/16" ID will be a easier fit, but it will need to be clamped. It slides over the outer part of the fuel pipe after you cut it to remove the old check valve. The pipe is very stiff, and it won't collapse very easily.
Do a search, and you will find other methods of attachment. Walter Wong, a site sponsor, recommends cutting the fuel pipe connection above the last ring on the check valve, leaving a flared end. Then apply heat either with a heat gun, hair drier, bowl of boiling water, etc., to the end of fuel pipe, and using the flared end, fitting over the tip of the new check valve. It takes skill and patience to do that method, and of course safety with the heat source around gas.
