Well, mayhaps you're correct if the engine detects pinging detonation knock it can and will retard the timing and boost, but this was apparently an A/C overcharging issue. Easy to do now that they sell A/c do it yourself freon cans and make it seem sooooo easy ! I wish we could get 93 octane here! We live in the middle of the Sonoran desert, Tucson, Az (Now true, death valley CA would be worse !) Best we can get is 91 still, we don't really ever have many problems.(but you're right we could ) and I've a Viggen one the highest specific output tuned models Saab produced .And it's not stock. If Saab,( et all) owners have issues of heat-related problems there are many simple DIY fixes. we've done them ourself. Heat insulation products fr co.'s like DEI Inc , Thermo-tech, JC Whitney (now available as cheap Chinese knock offs on alibaba.com !) et all, exhaust wraps, turbo blankets, hose, component insulation, etc . There are inexpensive systems that will spray a fine mist of water/alcohol mix on the radiator on demand (hit the button a few times at a stoplight, or in stop and go traffic, cools instantly ! ) BUT, remember , it's not just the radiator that gets cooled it's also the A/C condenser, intercooler, oil cooler . All these systems are interdependent and related There are more expensive systems that will spray c02 (think dry ice !)on components and even internally cool intake charge and or fuel w/a device in the intake tract !( Think like having a refrigerator in the intake! or in the fuel lines ) as ya' know a cooler intake air/ fuel charge has the effect of raising octane, is less prone to detonation etc. and makes more HP ,torque. Oh, yea ! don't forget the thermal chemicals," water wetters"radiator relief "etc. -They work! (we measured a 20- 30+ degree decrease using one ! )next will be conversion to all silicone hoses, a new pump, thermostat and "Evans waterless coolant " boils at 375! deg hence very safe! cool stuff Jay Leno uses it in all his hundreds of cars. A true lifetime coolant and can't ever boil over amazing stuff! no water so can't promote corrosion mayhaps useful in preventing" dissimilar metal corrosion " Hmmm... Saab, cast iron block, aluminum head? Ck it out! ok not cheap, but The fix and are you serious about keeping your Saab as long as possible?
