People here definitely aren't being cheap with the springs and spacers. We use spacers because even brand new factory springs will sag within months. It's just not worth it. Springs rarely break on these cars, so if the choice is between constantly replacing the factory springs to maintain ride height, or shimming the existing springs which have probably sagged as much as they're going to, I think the choice is obvious.
Believe me, no one in their right mind advocates for extended oil change intervals on these sludge-prone cars. The vast majority of people on here are all for reasonable change intervals with high quality oil
