Hi All,
Subject car is a 2001 9-5 SE 3.0 with 165,000 miles. Turbo is the Garrett GT1549. I am the original owner.
This is the 5th turbo (just one of many Sob Stories). This time I'm just installing the cartridge because I didn't feel like yanking the manifold again...that's a PITA
Here is where I stand:
-The old cartridge has been removed
-ignition fuse removed, battery disconnected
-new cartridge unit has been bench-primed and soaking with Mobil 1.
-new oil filter bench primed and soaking
-I've gone thru the PCV system checking for blockage in nipple, replaced the small hose & check valve at TB (flows toward TB) Cleaned larger hose going forward to intake side turbo pipe. Pipe was cleaned too.
-cleaned oil out of intake pipes and blew it out of inter cooler using leaf blower with cheesecloth filter
-TB has been cleaned with TB spray cleaner. I did not clean intake manifold plenum
-I've assembled new banjo bolts, seals and crush washers. new o-rings too
My install plan is a follows:
-clamp turbo loosely to exhaust manifold
-temporarily install oil pipe feed hard-line loosely and use it to clock the manifold to relieve stress
-remove oil pipe and tension the clamping plates/bolts to the exhaust manifold. I'm using a tool i fashioned with a 10mm socket and shortened and shaped 1/4" Allen key
-loosely install the intake housing and clock it to align with inter-cooler hose
-tighten those clamping bolts
-install the oil feed pipe, oil drain nipple & coolant lines. leave oil drain line off at this time. attach support brackets and heat shields
-install the turbo intake pipe and clamp to turbo. Hook up all other lines such as pcv pipe, blow off hose, clamp coolant hoses to the hard lines
-install new oil filter, and add new oil.
-add new coolant, connect battery
At this point I'll be ready to turn the engine over to pump pressurized oil through the turbo and observe the oil flowing out of the oil drain hose nipple on the bottom of the turbo. If the oil flow looks impressive, and the oil pressure lamp is off, then on goes the drain hose and elbow pipe.
Then it's top off the oil, plug in the fuse and start the motor !
So what am i missing ?
What precautionary suggestions do you all have for me ?
TIA,
John
