a few reasons for this... As others have said, stock springs sag shortly after installation. I installed brand new wagon springs in a sedan hoping the stiffer spring would better support the load (I sometimes fill the trunk - these cars really sag with load and when they sag, they tend to eat tires). This was at the same time I put new Koni sports on all 4 corners. Within maybe 6 months, the wagon springs sagged and I installed spacers.
The car works fine and is in no way risking spring breakage when it sags, but it does eat the inside edge off of tires which is really costly and potentially dangerous if not caught in time.
The reason for spacers vs aftermarket... there are lots of aftermarket lowering springs, but fewer full height. Aftermarket tends to be about performance, but that is not necessarily what is needed here. Also, it would be ideal to get progressive springs for this car, but again, not super easy to source (other than lowered ride height springs - I think Eibach makes a progressive but lowered spring).
I never really looked into it again. Our ride height has been ok since installing Nick's spacers (specifically designed for Koni shocks). saabsince93b is on the right track here... also, a tip, loctite the top nuts even though they are doubled. So much vibration that they can come loose!
Back on topic: my front ride height is still low - couldn't find an easy good way to fix that when I was doing the shocks. I think my rears are probably a touch low, but overall it is pretty reasonable and the front to back is not too out of whack. If someone knows a good solution to the front ride height, let me know! But the inside edge tire eating seems to mostly happen at the rear.
9-5 does not tend to break springs but 9-3ss does (or at least it was common for some model years)... different cars have different issues!
