Old thread but for future searchers: Knipex 4911A4 External Straight Precision Retaining Ring Pliers 12.75in. They're big and a bit expensive but they're nice and the tips are bent slightly inward to keep that circlip from slipping off. I had one slip off and the force broke off one of the tabs that hold the ring. And that was after finding that the ring wouldn't even budge so I tapped on one end of it with a hammer and punch to loosen it. Yes, the other tab broke off. That means new timing cover. Learning shouldn't be this painful.
