Similar conundrum with Mrs. Jessica's 9-3, except there is a known leak. In her case, the symptom is a gradual loss of cooling on the passenger outlet, then after a while it stops altogether. I know, she needs to get it fixed, but she's waiting for a class action settlement to pay off (she's one of the attorneys) so she can trade it for a Bolt and harvest the government incentive. Anyway, to get by until then, she purchased a can of refrigerant that includes a gauge on the tube. The tube goes onto the low pressure side and instructions are to fill according to the low side pressure. We did that, and with a small but reasonable fraction of the can inserted the pressure reading didn't change. Using the Hippocratic approach (first do no harm) we decided to stop. But the symptom improved. So I'm thinking that your answer is to gauge the low pressure side while its operating. If it's any higher than around 25 psi gauge pressure, I'd refrain from adding any more refrigerant.
You are doing the diagnostic with the a/c set to "Lo" on both sides so that the dreaded coolant shut-off valve (if you still have it) is shut off, right?
