Sometimes on extremely rare occasions both on Saab's and Volvo's the latch mechanism can break which is the very last piece in the whole scheme of door opening logic. It is very fine 'teeter totter' links and springs that can break.
It can be a major major headache all depending on year/model/brand and no one can give a straight advice since every case is different.
It might entail breaking the door panel or cutting through the door skin whichever is best and then replace parts that got destroyed.
The best advice I can give you is to either find a junk car/door or the other side of your car and slowly take it apart and educate yourself in what makes it "tick" and then from there, build an opinion on how you want to tackle this.
Some year/model/brands it is possible to snake out the door panel with door close.
