Repair and re-skin Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Tue, 1 Aug 2017 03:15:53 In Reply to: Re: 9-5 is in the shop, Jeremy R., Mon, 31 Jul 2017 22:12:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Total labor will be about $250 to pull the skins off the driver's seat, repair the seat cushion skin with new vinyl for the inserts, install the repaired seat skin, and install an all new seat back skin I got from Saab Parts. Cost of the seat back skin was ~$290. So about ~$540 total.
Some upholstery shops (the one this work is being done at) refuse to touch any seams adjacent to the side air bag. My new seat back skin arrived inside-out so it was easy to inspect these factory seams which the air bag will deploy through. I was shocked to see that the seams are the designed release point! I expected to see a type of engineered rupture membrane stitched into the seam at this point, but none is used!
The strength of the thread, the size of the stitches, the tension used on the sewing machine, etc., are all variables which are somehow computed into the rupture strength the air bag must overcome to deploy at the precise instant it is needed.
