I also shut off A/C a few blocks from home, if for nothing else than to go easy on it.
I hate to see people refueling a running car, though--I've seen a gas station go up in flames and while it's not certain what the cause was, anything that can minimize that dreadful event is worth doing, especially since it has the potential to affect the safety of others (one isn't just making the decision for one's self, but for others, usually without their consent).
Sorry to get on the soapbox, but I'll never forget the sight...
