I have to trust my feel, then. I've been torquing the drain plug when changing the (engine) oil by hand. Someone here once told me that if I grab the head of the socket wrench and turn hard, it'll be around 20 ft/lbs. It felt around that and definitely not too tight, so I always give it a little more. I feel confident with that.
I'm not sure about pulleys, however. I feel fairly confident but I'm definitely not very experiences. I also when by how tight it was when removing it (which it presumably might tighten over time as the belt spins in the direction of tightening...speaking of which, why don't they make the lug nuts on the rims directional??. I'd imagine the left side wheels to loosen more easily.)
