So, I was tired of my beat Golf, and wanted to be a classy member of society, no longer an embarrassment to my wife when I arrived to events. 2003 Aero, dark blue, tan interior, it's a beautiful car! Purchased with the front end clunk, thought engine mounts would be it.
Drove for 3 days, got smashed at an event, so wife drove home. On the way, the alternator dies, and I just cheer her on when I was awake lol. Fast forward a few weeks, collect parts, fetch tools from my old garage and tackle the job. Alternator and engine mounts done, new long serp belt, pulled and tensioner was easy enough. It's running, charging, battery tested okay, all seems well enough.
I am a little disappointed in the amount of things these cars need. My last Saab was an 87 900T, purchased it with a slightly slipping clutch, drove for 60k and only needed a starter, a pulley that fell off, and a spacer for the reverse/back up light. I got my wife a 2005 A4, Quattro with the 3.0 V6 because it needed a clutch, so was cheap. New clutch and drove the car for 70k, the only maintenance necessary was the timing/WP. These newer Saabs want everything lol. Clutch is fine for now, but the engine mounts only fixed the worst of the clunks, subframes are next, gotta wait. PCV, valve covers and re-torque the heads first I guess. This car only has 140, with the older 900's, this was brand new still. I love the ride, I've been without a turbo car for over 10 years, so this is nice, though I may like the pull in the 3.0 Audi a little more. Fuel mileage is nice, 32ish, less than the golf, but it's a bigger car. I'm mostly pleased, I just really wish these cars were built for the long haul like the 900's.
