Hepu water pump failure Posted by Gene N [Email] (#1094) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gene N) on Sun, 10 Sep 2017 19:57:01 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Only 38,000 miles on the Hepu water pump on my 2002 Aero, and the bearing failed on the pump. The symptom was a chirping in the belt area. I figured it was one of the pulleys, but when I took off the belt only the water pump had significant play. I did some research on the replacement pumps available, and the price spread was pretty significant. The highest cost pump was SAAB branded (made in Spain) while the low end was ProParts (made in, where else, China). In the middle was Hepu (made in Germany, but out for obvious reasons) and Graf (made in Italy, I think). I was getting ready to buy the SAAB pump ($150), but I found an Airtex-Wells ($25) pump that was also made in Spain that looked pretty good and had a "lifetime" guarantee. I rationalized that it was unlikely that there was more than one company in Spain that made Saab water pumps so that it was probable that they were the same pump.
I guess I'll find out if I'm right. I did use the Saab branded hoses. Last time I used the Uro hoses, and I wasn't happy with the quality and fit
