you can check the fuel pump using a current clamp and an oscilloscope. Search the bb for more info, Swedecar has photos of traces and there are other pictures on the bb of other people doing this also. I was concerned about our fuel pump a while back and did this test, and it was quite useful. I should probably do it again and see if there is any change.
Aside from that, how the car dies matters. Kurt, did it die suddenly, or did electronics (wipers, lights, radio, interior lighting etc) slowly cut out or fade out... that is generally a sure sign of a bad alternator (runs off the battery and won't start again). You can measure battery voltage while running to rule this out.
If he restarted and got to work, and there were no codes, I would suspect the fuel pump.
