You don't have to pull the engine to remove the timing cover. I've done it twice on a pair of 9-5s, and while it's not the most pleasant job, it's perfectly doable. That being said, it greatly complicates a routine head gasket job. You should be able to visually check some of the guides when the head's off, and pulling the tensioner will tell you if the chain is still in decent shape. Remember to unscrew the plug before removing the tensioner body, or else the tensioner will ratchet out all the way and you won't be able to measure the extension. While the head is out, I'd at least have it cleaned and the valve stem seals replaced. Exhaust manifold hardware should also be replaced, since some studs will break, and you might as well replace the water pump while you're in there. Other minor things I've replaced while doing the same job are dipstick tube seals, PCV hoses, thermostat, temperature sensor, oil pressure sensor, and the alternator's voltage regulator.
