sounds like the gasket didn't seat properly..
Based on the design, with that deep groove.. it shouldn't require much torque at all.. and as long as you balance out the tightening sequence, much like lug nuts on a tire. .then I would think you're ok..
I would opt to try something "sticky".. to hold it in place.. especially at the corners.. just a few dabs should do it... Some type of sealant rated for heat and oil should do it.. I think I used some type of permatex gasket sealant in the past. .with zero issues..
