I sure can pick 'em!
Head is warped and there's stop leak in the coolant channels--couple badly clogged. Jackets on the block look ok from the top, but there could be stop leak lower down.
There are machine marks on the head and the block. It's amazing that someone likely had the engine out of the car and didn't correct the timing cover leak.
Pistons look ok. There are heat marks in the cylinders. Mechanic thinks the radiator has been replaced, and this car got really hot some time in its history, then just poor repair. I have no way of knowing on a car that is now 14 years old with multiple owners before me, but it's hard to argue with the visual evidence.
There's some sludge in the top, so it seems wise to drop the pan.
The timing chain is not stretched. Moderate cold-start noise could be from the balance shafts chain, which is far from ideal.
I'm going to just address the head now and not go for a full reseal. Will do a de-sludge, too. This is going to be a back up car--if I decide to keep it indefinitely.
The advice here to only buy one with good service records is always sound. I got tired of looking for a Linear wagon after 1.5 years, and I jumped at a local one that had a couple red flags, but otherwise checked all the boxes. My mistake, and it's likely the last 9-5 I'll buy.
