Dead battery: is there any replacement procedure?

Looks like my 4-year-old Interstate battery in my '01 Aero is pretty much dead. I haven't had time to take it to them to test (I know I'll get something off the price of a new one, as it's a 5-year battery...) yet.
My last 2 battery replacements on the Aero were after roadside failures, and I wanted to make sure the charging system wasn't at fault.
This afternoon I used my little lithium battery jump box to restart (love that thing!) so no big deal at this point. I'm hoping I don't have a failing positive battery cable, but I think 4 years is about all I ever get from a battery.
I need to take the battery out of the car to take to the local Interstate shop, no big deal. But I seem to recall that when you install a new battery in the older Saabs, there are some things that will need resetting - yes? Also, what kind of lubricant goes on the terminals?
Thanks for any advice you can offer.
