Did you attempt to fill the tank full thereafter (I would) and if so, how many gallons did it take?
I'm wondering if you lost continuity to everything back there - in other words an intermittent electrical fault. Meaning, there WAS gas in there and you never "ran out of gas" at all. You just couldn't make use of the ample fuel you had. So, at least inspect the electrical line from the front of the car back to where the level sending unit AND pump are located, looking for damage to the lead.
