Nope. The shark fin antenna was only used for the now defunct analog OnStar system. Substituting a dummy shark fin for the original antenna has no effect on the radio. Also, the static was there before I did the shark fin swap.
The FM/AM radio uses part of the grid on the rear window as an antenna. There is an antenna amplifier in the right side C-pillar that is part of the system that boosts the signal from the antenna grid.

I reread your post and I realize that you meant put a small whip in place of the shark fin and run the antenna lead down to the antenna amplifier. That has potential, as long as the static from the defroster grid is not picked up by the whip antenna.
