Hi, I wanted to share how I fixed the small 2.5" center channel speaker, hopefully this can be helpful to someone:
Car: My new-to-me 2001 9-5 Aero, I believe it has the Harmon stereo system but I'm not sure that's relevant.
Symptom: Annoying buzzing from the center channel speaker, most notable on vocals or spoken word.
Fix: I removed the speaker from the dash (very easy to do, gently pry up the grill then loosen two screws). Gently pry up the round plastic frame that holds the back cloth covering. The foam surround of the speaker was visibly torn and disintegrating.
I ordered a new speaker surround from eBay, there are many listings and the one I ordered was named, "2.5 inch 63mm Speaker Surround Foam Woofer Edge Audio Repair" and it came from China and cost about two dollars. I had never done this type of repair before, but working slowly and gently and watching a few videos on Youtube I was able to replace the speaker surround. I used wood glue, but it seems that some people have luck with other types of glue too. I glued the surround in two stages (to the speaker cone, then to the metal frame) letting it dry overnight between steps. When glueing the second step verify that the speaker cone is centered and happily moves up and down.
I had intended to reinstall the black cloth/plastic ring but it seemed that the plastic frame interfered with the new, slightly larger surround so I left it off. Reinstall and rock and roll.
