I'm 6'3" and yes, properly inserting the cabin air filter is rather painful. To alleviate that, I start by placing a large rigid plastic camping cooler flush with the open passenger side door; its top is level with the lower door sill and gives me a platform to slide on my back and onto the floor. With my shoes off, I then pivot on my back until my hips are resting on the passenger seat. I use a headlamp flashlight to see what's what underneath. Obviously one has to have the tools prepositioned on the floor for blind retrieval when needed. It would be a much easier job with the passenger seat removed, of course. My back aches a bit afterwards, and I am very careful when moving my neck at unnatural angles to eyeball the filter slot.
It's definitely a suboptimal design... with the worst feature being the interference between the top sealing foam strip and the evaporator pipes. IMO the filter should have been designed to be replaceable from the engine bay cowling, above the cabin air filter.
Some years back, it was necessary for the evaporator on my '99 to be replaced. I left that job to my mechanic and it was a beastly job for him to complete.
BTW, good find on a door lock cap. I lost mine years ago, unfortunately, and could not find a replacement. There is also one for the trunk keyhole.
