Yeah, 03 was the last year for the V6.
It's very rare to have a genuine IDM die like that without setting codes first.
The Chinese after market ones though can do it at any time which is sad since that's the problem Saab was battling in 99-2000.
Now people are jumping on the bandwagon buying cheap knock offs that will melt down the cat when they fail.
It's a hassle dealing with weld in cats on these 4 cyl 9-5 due to the pancake style pre cat squeezed in between engine and radiator. And that's the one that melts down. The main cat under car is usually good to go.
Each State have different emission rules and where you live, it might be ok to use only one cat but here in CA, LA area it has to be a CARB approved cat which makes it difficult.
Until you have cleaned the throttle body, erased code and reset limp home mode, you can't say for sure. But if the 1230 code comes back again, it probably needs a new throttle body.
