You don't have to splurge for the Kappas. Infinity is now marketing a cheaper Primus line, and Harman's sister company JBL offers several different lines. The engineering behind all of Infinity and JBL's offerings is very similar, and even the cheapest ones will be an upgrade over the very cheap 2.5 in paper cone speakers that came from the factory. I'd look at Best Buy or Harmanaudio.com for the best deal.
Another cheap option is Pioneer's TS-A series. I installed a pair of 6x9s in one of my 9-5s, and they were fine.
The key is that you choose a speaker with low impedance and high sensitivity. That will give you the closest sound level match to the factory speakers. The treble knob can cut some sizzle if what you choose sounds too hot to your ears. The primary advantage, IMO, to the Kappas and the previously available Infinity reference line is that the tweeter had an adjustment switch to cut the level down. This is a nice feature to have, but it isn't essential.
