Has Anyone Tried Calibrating Their Fuel Gauge as per the WIS? The WIS prescribes one or more of the following points, programmed with a Tech 2 after pouring in a measured quantity of fuel into the tank (values shown are cumulative):
- tank offset
- tank empty (0 L)
- tank reserve (10 L)
- tank night panel (15 L)
- tank 1/4 (19 L)
- tank 1/2 (38 L)
- tank 3/4 (58 L)
I fully agree it is not good practice to allow the fuel gauge to drop below a quarter tank. But why tolerate inaccurate readings if they can be remedied? I wonder whether the analog-to-digital conversion function inside the MIU drifts over life.
The WIS technical description is interesting. When the sensed fuel level is less than 10 liters, the MIU control module switches from measuring fuel level to measuring fuel consumption (via bus messages from the ECU). So this could be another source of error.
Prior to installation of the fuel pump assembly, the fuel lever sender resistance can also be measured across the range of travel (see link).
