I removed the baffle about 4 years ago. Problem seems to be from deposits on the sensor's resistance element. Perhaps low volatility and summer grade fuel is a factor.
Some have pulled the unit and cleaned the surface of the resistance element and restored function. That worked for me for a while. Most frequent problem seems to be a full tank registering as empty with a low fuel warning light.
Most of my shock was that 18.4 USgal was even possible.
