I pretty much grew up in a chemistry lab so my first instinct is not the taste test (self-preservation). Actually, my cars get annually oil sprayed, so (in addition to it probably tasting more like oil than salt), there's probably enough grease in there to make poutine already... like you say, just add potatoes!
Coolant and oil don't mix too nicely, so maybe coolant goes white when it dries on an oil film? This car has had a long standing minor coolant leak (top up every couple months), but hasn't always had the white specs either... in my recollection, this started shortly after getting the car oil sprayed for the first time this fall (it is new to us).
I do know that I've had coolant leaks before (in multiple cars*), and driven in salty conditions for decades (in multiple cars*), yet never ran into this... kind of intriguing...
* "multiple cars" in both cases includes an almost identical 9-5
