There is something to the concept of the white residue being coolant. I recall that one summer, I had the heater BPV start leaking, and then it stopped, on its own. Only sign that it had leaked was some spots of white residue on the valve and one of the hoses where it had evaporated.
(replaced the valve anyway -- couldn't risk a repeat).
Perhaps you have a pinhole that is generating a spray of some sort when pressurized? On the battery side of the car you have those smaller hoses running to/from the coolant reservoir that may be worth a closer look.
