I've driven my wife's Aero and have seen the light show. It doesn't matter who is driving it or whose key it is. My wife had a brilliant observation. The lights go dim / out only when the headlights are on. The SID and ACC display along with the odometer light level all drop when the phenomenon occurs. The lights behind these displays are always on, and the dimming phenomenon has *never* been observed without the headlights being on.
Here's a thought. I replaced the HID controller on the right side only when I had the headlight level control go on the fritz. The controller in the light that came with the car was an aftermarket Valeo unit that would not talk to OpCom. I bought a used OEM SAAB controller and it talked to OpCom and revealed the leveling switches were bad (common malady). I left the OEM controller in the headlight after the fix was implemented. I wonder if the controllers being different has anything to do with it? I still have the Valeo unit I removed. I could try putting it back in, or buying a SAAB OEM controller for the left side headlight too.
I never remember this dashboard light show ever occurring prior to the headlight level correction job back in 2015. We've had the car since '11.
I've also heard that replacing Xenon headlight bulbs correcting other seemingly unrelated lighting issues. I'd bet the bulbs in this car are original (12 years old).
Changing the bulbs and one controller (used OEM) will run about $280. Not a cheap experiment but the bulbs could stand replacement anyway. Car parts for Christmas - not something every woman wants.
My '00 BMW has HID Xenon lights too and the headlights used to flash on and off intermittently - a much more dangerous situation. It turned out to be a bad ground in the right tail-light that was corrected by a $0.25 jumper.
Stay tuned.
