I just picked up a 2005 wagon that does the same thing. Starts first crank when the cars been run recently. But let it sit for a few nights, and the first crank - start and stall. Then start right up on next try. My gut feel is the "check valve" located at the fuel line connection to the fuel pump - is leaking. The fuel pressure in the line drops over time - thus requiring more crack time from the pump top re-pressurize. I would replace the valve, but it is a PIA because it is attached to the hard, plastic tubing - which makes it very hard to install a new valve into the tubing.
