You mentioned checking all the bulbs - does that mean checking them via VOM or did someone help you and observe all functions from outside while you cycled through the ON/OFF, brakes, turn signals, flashers, running lights only, etc. ? I apologize if you have already done the latter, but just thought I'd ask.
Checking local ground integrity for socket vs. chassis was a good suggestion - on the sportcombi's the connector from wiring harness to the socket is susceptible to corrosion if there is any leakage at the lens edge. This might result in poor local ground even though the harness is okay.
I have troubles recollecting what differences if any I saw between error messages for 2005 Arc sedan we once had and the 2006's I maintain now - but I know the 2006's have a separate message for the brake light function for the 1157 bulbs. One of our two 2006 cars had old cheap bulbs that melted a solder bump and gave the 'brake light' error. New, Sylvania bulbs fixed the issue. The PO or hired hand of the other of those two 2006's did 'hack job', trying to solve a bad bulb/socket contact on incorrect bulb on one tail light. I replaced the bulbs and had to re-bend connector to get back to original. In a perfect world I should probably replace the whole socket, but it works so far.
Good luck, and let us know when you solve it.
