I think I lacked heat when mine failed in winter... I replaced tstat and temperature sensor at the same time. So I guess I can't really say which one actually failed because I tested neither after the fact!
I forget what tool I used - maybe an o2 sensor socket? I forget if that is 19 or 21mm... hmm, looking back at past threads I think I just had a deep socket that was hollow enough to fit over the connector.
I would try unplugging the connector, spraying with contact cleaner and reconnecting before doing anything else. Most electrical problems tend to be bad connections.
