Alert me when someone posts in this thread:

You seem to be on to something . Makes sense to me , as the thermostats do not seem to have a jiggle pin , which allows air to pass . I just ordered a "Gates" brand , which lists a jiggle pin ,..but the photo shows a " Motorad " part ....who knows what I will get . I just cleared out my metal recycling barrel so I can't investigate my 4 or 5 old stats ...a couple of Motorads , a Vernet , and a cheapo with all the markings deburred off . Had just as mixed number of water pumps from all over the world , all with funky bearing issues .

So the water pump demise is caused by the thermostat air lock . Sounds reasonable . I will have to take a closer look at the OEM thermostat, or whatever they have at my dealer . Wasn't "Wahler" the original ? The one with the thinnest o-ring around .

The water pumps don't actually "fail" , they just weep coolant and eventually start squealing / saying ...." replace me "
