I agree that starting a 9-5 without a pre-start block heater warm up when it's -15C is a disturbing affair. At -27C, I pity each one of the skid full of parts that became all those bits and pieces under the hood. It's not a pretty noise, with the air suddenly filled with a cacophony of clang and clatter with the odd knashing of teeth. I have read in the past that using a block heater at any temperature reduces fuel consumption, wear and emissions, even in the summer but I haven't done any type of cost-benefit analysis since the really cold days have been few up to this year. I also left out a bottle of Mobil 1 0w40 to see how it poured at -27C. It wasn't too much better than molasses at that temp but improved significantly by the time it was -15C (poured like a light maple syrup). This further supports the -15C threshold hypothesis that we are damaging our engines at temperatures colder than about -15C without a block heater in spite of the reassuring viscosity of the 0W40.
