KW, I ordered the thermostat cheap on Ebay and a timing belt kit at a giveaway price. The sellers canceled my orders as a pricing error. I just ordered an AC/Delco stat from Amazon. Expensive at around $36. It included the housing. I am hoping it has some type of air bleeder. I think the Guy I talked to in support was right on. Several years ago, I bought a Stant stainless thermostat for my V6. Installed it and my records show new water pumps very frequently since. The Stant has no air bleeder. Technical Support told me if there is no air bleeder, drill one. He said the vehicle may take longer to heat up but I won't be burning up water pumps. Currently, the plastic timing cover on my SAAB is splattered with white residue, presumably from the water pump. Still working but for how long?
Also found this from Gates site:
A lot of mechanics stick to the following procedure: replace the water pump, tighten the bolts, install the belt, tighten the tensioner, refill the cooling system … and start the engine (or just rev it up). But coolant takes a little time to get everywhere it’s supposed to be, so the water pump runs dry for a few seconds. This ruins the seal and heightens the risk of premature leaks or a noisy water pump.
