My daughter's 2006 wagon with halogens (other one has Xenons) had its left high beam out - and gave an error message when high beams were activated. The bulb was good - I replaced anyway, and confirmed it was not the bulb.

I suspected the Orange Relay - according to eEuroparts this is the same part number from 1999 to 2009. My daughter had the car at her work, but I could get there this a.m., so I 'borrowed' the relay from our '99 SE, popped it apart, and checked/re-flowed the solder joints between the circuit board and the base pins. I drove to my daughter's work, installed the '99 relay in my daughter's 2006, and presto! All headlight functions restored =).

I inspected the relay from the 2006: It had cracking on two of the solder joints, and a little browning (from heat ?) at one of them. I reflowed the solder at three of the joints, installed into the '99 9-5, and all headlights worked.

While this might seem like a "shotgun" method of trouble shooting and getting lucky, it is really just using available information to make the Orange Relay the first step in a proper decision tree. It's all made possible by the shared knowledge of this board and others like it. Thanks all who've posted on this in the past!

P.S. I try to explain to my wife and daughters that the only smart thing I do in this is seeking good information and advice =).
