Tires make a huge difference and you need different tires for the best handling than you do for comfort.
My wife's 9-5 wagon has had a couple sets of Michelins, a set of Uniroyals and now a set of Bridgestone Serenitys. All basically grand touring tires, which are fine for her DD and our road trip car. I like the Serenitys the best. We put snows on come winter; General Altimax Arctic.
For the best handling a real summer tire with a softer compound would make the car handle better, but would be wasted on her. She'd notice but wouldn't care. So why spend the money on a car I don't drive much?
OTOH, my 9K DD has had various performance tires on it and when I was doing track days I really liked the stickier tires. But now that car has Serenitys, too. The handling is not as sharp, but they last a lot longer and the ride is better on the crummy roads we have around here. Smoother and quieter on the highway, too.
It's all in what works for you.
