If I were in your shoes, i'd start by checking the battery cables - if the battery was lose, the braking could have stressed the cables or dislodged the terminals. I remember reading that these battery cables have been known to corrode over time in salty environments, so maybe that event was the culprit that could have pushed the poor cable to its limits.
Another thing could be grounding - I had a similar issue once when I replaced the thermostat in the car and didn't tighten the ground on the thermostat housing (was afraid i'd strip the aluminum housing). Again, that's something else which could have come lose during a heavy braking incident and result in chaos afterwards.
