... for the well-wishes and congratulations. Pondering it some more, it seems that the "use case" for racking up miles like this really depends on the car providing the best utility to get where we need to go. In my case, after I was laid off three years ago and for nearly 15 months, my driving slowed to double digits accumulated monthly. Then suddenly... bam!... back to work and my driving increased to 850 miles per week! With three to four hours daily on the road, I couldn't do that and pick up a project management certificate after hours, so about half the time I drove Saab #1 to the nearby train station, took two commuter trains, and then picked up Saab #2 that I kept parked at the other train station 80 miles away for cycling to and from my temp gig. After that job ran its course, another year of Saab #2 ('99 SE) laying fallow until I got another contracting gig 60 miles from home. Love the solo drive in the predawn dark, but the afternoon/evening return home is mostly horrific (there is no way of getting out of LA traffic). Will probably vanpool part time but I much prefer driving for comfort, convenience, and the health of my back and neck.
What is amazing was how TSN member Herb Hirsch consistently clocked out 50k miles per year, for five consecutive years, before retiring his 2000 Aero and from the working world. If he had kept up that pace, he would have hit over 800 k miles by now.
Million miler SAAB 9-5's and their drivers must constitute a very small club indeed.
