If the sway bar links are suspect, why not replace them and see what sounds remain?
Sway bar links are surely a common source for noise in the front end. You can use a strategically placed crow bar and apply pressure at the ends to see if they move. But if you have any significant mileage on the car I'd also be prepared to replace shocks/struts, ball joints, tie rod ends, and all manner of bushings.
