The problems with silicone are that it's slick enough that sometimes the hoses will slide off, and if you use them for vacuum hoses that can have oil residue running through them, like on the PCV hoses, they'll sweat oil and swell up. You should be able to get at least 5 years out of rubber hoses, maybe more. For the cost and local availability, I've stuck with rubber on my three Saabs. I did use fuel hose for the PCV hoses on all three cars since even rubber hoses degrade more quickly when exposed to oil. It wasn't easy to find, but a local marine supplier had it.
