I must confess, I'm running 225 x 45 x 17 General AS-03s and 05s on all my 9-5s, except for one which is running 205 x 55 x 16s. I've got a tread width that close to congruent with the width of the wheel it is mated to, and it isn't (in the case of this brand/model) throwing the odo off much at all.
And the gravy is, the cover panel in the Wagon closes completely and with room extra, and the cover panel on the sedans is only a little bit proud of where it would be with the doughnut. The main downside is the added weight of the full sized wheel and tire - but when the tire or wheel and tire are downsized a little, some of the gain is covered anyway.
Yeah, I haven't been using that plastic parcel tray. And the rubber protective cover for the wagon floor is only used when needed. Easier to toss a plastic bin in the trunk for toting wet things, until the big tasks come along.
