So much for my prediction powers. The plastic bushing in the eye on the end of the transmission cable was completely gone. The NSS was perfectly fine. I was able manually move the lever to put the transmission in Park, then started the car. My son-in-law kept his foot firmly on the brake while I shifted the car into Reverse, then Drive to get the car out its parking spot in Manhattan (lot of trust involved here).
We drove the car out to his parents house on Long Island and parked there where it won't get ticket twice a week for street cleaning violation. I don't know if NY actually cleans the streets or if it is just a way to keep people from parking their car and never moving it.
Ordered two of the plastic bushing repair kits off of ebay, since my 2002 9-5 Aero bushing looked cracked. I'll report how that works out when they arrive.
