Hard to tell from the photo but it looks to me like that piston has heavy carbon build up.
I did an in-situ rebuild (con and main bearings, rings and valve train refresh) on our 02 Aero. It wasn't too hard. The engine had heavy oil varnish from running cheap dino-juice. The valve stem seals were the cause of most of the oil consumption, with gunked-up rings adding to the problem.
The pistons, head and valves were all heavily coated with hard carbon so I spent a lot of time with a brass wire wheel getting them cleaned up. Put back all together the engine runs much better.
I found it was easier to pull the head with the intake manifold and TB attached. Some of the intake bolts are in tough locations when the head's on the block. Removal and placement is a two-person job. The head's not heavy but it takes a little effort to get it off and on the locating dowel pins. Having a "spotter" help guide that unwieldy chunk of aluminium reduces the chance of damage to the timing chain guides.
