Belt botch Posted by TimN [Email] (#2379) [Profile/Gallery] (more from TimN) on Tue, 14 Aug 2018 17:33:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
About a month ago I replaced the pulley, tensioner and belt on my 2007 9-5 (eeuroparts kit). At the time everything looked fine. And I have experience with the old 2000 9-5. Yet, the other day the spousal unit called saying smoke was coming from the hood. The belt had come off, ripped to shreds, spun around the various components and started smoking from the friction heat.
I had to do something wrong. Yet it’s not obvious. The pulley is good, tensioner installed correctly (This I know since initially I started bolting it in with the alignment pin wrong.), the pumps/alternator/compressor all spin fine, everything is aligned by checking with a straight edge. The only thing that I can think of is that I didn’t put the belt entirely or too far over the crankshaft pulley and it slowly worked off.
A bad belt is almost impossible. Foreign object thrown into the engine compartment? I replaced the belt and so far so good. Still this is a shout out to see if the community has experienced anything similar. Thanks.
