Some of the factors to consider are:
Cars seem most plentiful in New England, but prices are higher and rust is more evident;
If you're in an isolated area, you may not see a nice one to go check out for weeks, or months;
Down South you have to worry about sunburnt cars and those that have been immersed in water; and
Whether you buy another will depend on how much wrenching you do. Those who don't do any of their own repairs, are in a bind.
You're down to one driver. I've got four 9-5s and while most could use some upgrades, they can all make the trip to California if necessary. I rotate them between the 3 places I have to stay but any one of the 9-5s spends 50% or more time in a rural area and so all are registered and insured there and the rates are very low. If I had to pay high insurance, I might choose another path.
My last 2 I bought in 2015, in Reading PA and in Alexandria, VA. I like to buy a choice, low mileage trade-in 9-5 at a Mercedes, Acura or similar dealer. Space on used cars lots, upscale brands, is precious. They get tired of the Saab sitting there and they accept the very offer you think they never would. They've auctioned off the less choice ones and have more integrity/pride than most - less liable to sell you a worm. Buy a 9-5 where it is one of the least expensive cars on the lot - never when it is the most expensive thing a lot offers.
Buy the high output 4, and certainly not a 6. Good luck.
